The UK’s leading coach and bus technicians gathered at the beginning of June for the 2025 IRTE Bus and Coach Skills Challenge, held over three days at S&B Automotive Academy in Bristol.

Backed by major industry players, the contest spotlights the technical expertise that underpins UK coach and bus operations. The only national event of its kind for PSV maintenance, it saw technicians and apprentices from operators across the UK face a series of practical challenges designed to test diagnostic, mechanical and electrical skills.

S&B Automotive Academy hosted the competition once again, providing facilities and technical support, while DVSA offered industry oversight.

Sponsors included Alexander Dennis, Imperial Engineering, Clarios VARTA, C9 Recruitment, GYS, and GTG Engineering.

“The IRTE Skills Challenge 2025 has raised the bar once again,” a spokesperson says. “From diagnostics to mechanical and electrical tasks, the competition tested not just knowledge, precision, and real-world application. For the engineers competing, it was a chance to prove their skills. For the sector, it was a moment to shine a light on the people who keep Britain moving.

“As testing wraps and scores are sealed, all eyes now turn to the 2025 IRTE Skills Challenge Awards Ceremony, taking place on Wednesday 16 July at the Grand Station, Wolverhampton. Here, in front of sector leaders, sponsors, and press, the most skilled PSV technicians and apprentices in the country will be recognised for their exceptional performance. The IRTE Skills Challenge isn’t just a competition, it’s a powerful platform in the industry for connecting with emerging talent, building brand credibility, and making a lasting impact.”
