Go-Ahead commits to 1,100 apprentices for post-pandemic rebound

Go-Ahead has committed to taking on more than 1,100 apprentices in 2021 across its bus and rail operations.

The investment comes in preparation for a COVID-19 rebound anticipated when movement restrictions are eased.

It includes a target of 700 engineering a bus driving apprentices for the operator’s London bus operations. The group says it has seen applications for bus apprenticeships grow by 33%.

Attracting and retaining women in transport is of particular focus. Go-Ahead continues to run a joint programme alongside Transport for London, ‘Women with Drive’ designed to attract female bus driver apprentices.

Says Go-Ahead Group People Director Scott Maynard: “In spite of the pandemic, we will continue promoting and supporting our people. We will always need great people to drive our buses, maintain our trains and help passengers on their journeys.

“Go-Ahead is built on apprenticeship programmes – many of the senior leaders in our organisation began as apprenticeships themselves. These targets demonstrate our commitment to investing in people who will be fundamental to Go-Ahead’s future.”
