On 17 March Nottingham City Transport (NCT) won the Environmental Improvement Award at the virtually held Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Awards for Excellence.

The award recognises NCT’s investment of £42m in low-emission vehicles since 2017, resulting in fleet emission reduction of 90% through full Euro VI compliance.

That investment includes 120 biogas double-deck buses and the installation of a biogas fuelling station, as well as exhaust treatment systems on 180 diesels and 10 Euro VI midi-buses.

That delivery was achieved with partnership through Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council, which supported NCT’s bids to the Office for Low Emission Vehicles bids and secured £3m of funding through DEFRA’s Clean Bus Technology Fund.

Roadgas, Air Liquide, Scania and Alexander Dennis were helped develop the biogas offering.

“NCT operates one of the youngest and greenest bus fleets in the country and we are thrilled to pick up the Environmental Improvement Award,” says NCT Engineering Director Gary Mason. “This recognises NCT’s significant fleet investment that has achieved a 90% reduction in fleet emissions and significantly improved Nottingham’s air quality.”

Other projects NCT has undertaken include installation of a computerised energy management system; LED lighting; recycling 90% of its waste; idling technology in its buses; and providing ‘safe and fuel efficient driving’ training to all drivers.

Steve Gooding FCILT, President of CILT (UK) adds: “This year, transport and logistics and its associated supply chains have been thrown into the global spotlight.

“At CILT, we know that many organisations and operators exemplify excellence throughout the sector, but do not receive the recognition they deserve. We wanted to take this opportunity to shine a light on those organisations, especially in the hardest of times.”
