To mark Clean Air Day on 17 June, believed to be the UK’s largest air pollution campaign, Stagecoach East Midlands is thanking customers who choose to travel by bus.
According to Stagecoach East Midlands Managing Director Matt Cranwell, independent research by the Centre for Economics and Business Research shows that Stagecoach bus services save 190,000 tonnes of CO2 through removing car travel, and that £343m in congestion-related savings are delivered every year from a reduction of 1.2bn miles of traffic. “Without our customers choosing to travel by bus, this would not be possible,” adds Mr Cranwell.
The operator has made clear its commitment to green travel and has highlighted recent milestones, such as a ÂŁ1bn investment in 7,000 new greener vehicles and technologies and its achievement of the Carbon Trust Standard for managing its global carbon footprint, first awarded in 2013 and then again in 2015.
“While we are proud of our achievements to date, we realise that there is still a lot of work to do, to achieve clear air travel solutions,” adds Mr Cranwell. “We have made a public commitment to achieve a zero carbon fleet by 2035 which will be driven by a multi-technology vehicle strategy, including battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell-electric buses, and will continue to work with people in the communities we serve to provide safe, reliable and comfortable travel solutions which encourage people to try bus travel rather than taking the car.”
