NEWM ‘Tap and Cap’ breaks £5 million barrier

More than £5 million has been saved by passengers due to National Express West Midland’s (NEWM) contactless capping scheme since its introduction in July 2021, the operator has announced.

“Tap and Cap” ensures passengers who use their contactless payment cards or devices never pay more than £4 for one day, £11.50 for three days or £15 for seven days on NEWM buses, no matter how many trips they make.

As against buying individual day savers, the three-day cap represents a saving of 50p and the seven-day equivalent a reduction of £13.

Since it was brought in on 19 July 2021, more than 340 million journeys have been made on the operators’ buses and the number using contactless has increased dramatically.

David Bradford, NEWM Managing Director, says: “With Tap and Cap, you can make as many bus journeys as you like using the same contactless card or device and we’ll cap your fare so you don’t pay more than you should.

“It takes away the stress of searching for change at the bus stop and is easy to do. “
