NatEx reveals big passenger increase on Transpennine routes

National Express has reported a 49% increase in passenger volume year-on-year over the last four months for certain of its coach services which have benefitted from Transpennine Express rail strikes.

While patronage on services linking Leeds, Manchester, Manchester Airport and Liverpool has been up by nearly half in recent months, the number of travellers on those routes between January and August 2023 increased by 69% compared to the same period in 2022.

The operator increased the number of services between Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool from eight to thirteen on 5 May to meet increased demand. The company added three new vehicles to serve these routes.

National Express also earlier this year increased the number of its daily services between Manchester and London to up to 17.

Across the UK, the number of passengers on the operator’s services increased from 10 million in 2021 to 16 million in 2022, with the company citing rail strikes and motorists’ fuel increases.

John Boughton, Commercial Director for National Express, says: “We’ve all seen the challenges that rail in the north west is having. People deserve a reliable and affordable public transport system, so we are stepping up to meet demand. 2023 has been hugely busy across our Trans Pennine services so far and customers are switching to our coaches because it’s reliable, great value and you’re guaranteed a seat.

“With significant investment in our new and enhanced services, we are making it even easier for our customers to enjoy a relaxing, comfortable journey with us and we look forward to welcoming even more customers onboard.”
