Arriva North West and Wales driver and trainer Richard Prescott (pictured, centre), who works at the operator’s Runcorn depot, has been crowned Road Safety Hero for 2023 by supplier Trakm8.

The fleet technology solutions provider launched the accolade to support charity Brake’s Road Safety Week, which most recently took place in November 2023. Trakm8 says that Mr Prescott shows “an exemplary commitment to road safety,” noting that he has influenced other drivers in fostering such a culture.

As part of his training role at Runcorn, Mr Prescott works with new recruits on route knowledge, vehicle familiarisation, and enhanced driving skills.

That engagement has yielded what the operator says are “remarkable results,” placing the Cheshire depot among the safety leaders across Arriva’s UK bus business with one of the lowest KPIs for road traffic accidents. Runcorn additionally has one of the lowest levels of road traffic incidents per new starter across Arriva’s North West and Wales operation.

Mr Prescott is also champion of the use of vehicle telematics at Runcorn. That has contributed to a 46% reduction in speeding incidents at the depot over the past year. In recognition of his award, he will receive a weekend break for two at The Langdale Hotel in the Lake District.

Speaking about the decision, Trakm8 Group Marketing Manager Nick Guise says: “Trakm8 is excited to celebrate drivers like Richard Prescott, showcasing their commitment to road safety.

“The Road Safety Hero search is an opportunity to champion road safety nationwide and honour those who go above and beyond to ensure the safety of our roads. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Richard Prescott rightfully earns the title of Road Safety Hero.

“His influence extends beyond new colleagues, positively impacting existing ones and showcasing measurable improvements in safety standards within the business.”
