Garden Museum opens

The Garden Museum opens its doors at the end of May after an 18-month, £7.5m redevelopment.

The modern architecture preserves St Mary’s ancient walls

The London attraction calls itself Britain’s only museum dedicated to the art, history and design of gardens. It is set in the ancient church of St Mary’s in Lambeth Palace Road, which has been restored, and inside architects have built a “playful, surprising” wooden structure containing seven new galleries. Outside, a new bronze extension frames a new garden by Dan Pearson.

Christopher Woodward, Director, says: “Britain is often said to be ‘a nation of gardeners’ and it now has a museum of its gardening heritage. This project, supported by the National Lottery, has enabled us to put our collection on display for the first time.

“It is a modern Museum in a very ancient place. But we also hope it is a happy, quiet place to just come and be.”
