Beamish, the Living Museum of the North, has seen its Coach Friendly status renewed by the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT).

The certificate was presented by Gavin Scott (pictured, right), who in addition to being CPT Regional Vice-Chair is Transport Manager at family operator Stanley Travel. Coach Friendly status recognises a commitment to providing excellent customer service for coaches and groups.

Mr Scott notes that renewal of the accreditation for Beamish “is testament to the hard work, commitment, and collaboration with the coach and bus community to ensure an excellent visitor experience.”

Beamish gained Coach Friendly status in 2019. In 2023 it welcomed more than 800 coach groups, and with an overall total of almost 802,000 visitors was North East England’s most visited attraction. Discounted admission is offered to groups of 15 or more paying guests, along with free coach parking and free admission for drivers and group visit organisers.

CPT Regional Manager for the North of England Andrew McGuinness notes that Beamish often draws positive comments from coach operators for its approach to the mode.

Mr Scott concurs, adding: “Beamish Museum is a wonderful attraction and one close to my heart. It always delivers a warm welcome to drivers, organisers and groups. There is ample coach parking space adjacent to the main entrance, and express entrance for passengers.

“Drivers are also very well taken care of, which is always a bonus. By gaining the award, Beamish has further enhanced its ability to attract large private groups and school visits, minimising congestion and environmental impact while promoting sustainable tourism practices.”

Beamish Museum Chief Operating Officer Samantha Shotton has welcomed renewal of the attraction’s Coach Friendly status, noting that it is one of “only a handful of places in the North East to hold this award.”

Adds Ms Shotton: “At Beamish, we are proud to offer a warm welcome and first-class experience to all visitors, so to have this acknowledged by CPT if fantastic.” Accreditation of further attractions and locations as Coach Friendly is understood to be in hand with CPT.
