The importance of prioritising bus services in new housing developments has been highlighted by Stagecoach and Go-Ahead Group in a new joint report.

As the government embarks on its mission to build 1.5 million new homes during the current parliament, the two operators have combined to urge planners to avoid creating car-dependent communities.

The report, Bus Services and New Residential Developments, uses new case studies to update Stagecoach guidance around bus services in new housing developments published in 2017.

Focusing mainly on future developments outside of metropolitan areas, the report offers guidance on highway design, bus stops and supporting infrastructure, house frontages and parking provision, and involving bus operators at the planning stage.

James O’Neill, Commercial Director at Stagecoach South, says: “Integrating high-quality bus services into new residential developments is essential for creating sustainable and well-connected communities.

“This report will help designers and transport planners ensure public transport is prioritised in urban planning, supporting both environmental goals and the evolving needs of residents, making bus travel the most attractive choice for new communities.”

The launch event, staged by the Bus Centre of Excellence, was was aimed at transport planners, development professionals, bus operators, local authorities, urban designers and consultants.

Martin Dean, Managing Director for UK Regional Bus at Go-Ahead Group, adds: “We know how essential bus services are to communities across the country so it’s vital that they are considered in any urban design scheme.

“By working together, we can ensure that future residential developments are well connected to schools, work and the wider community.”
