Kent operator Chalkwell Coach Hire is a further member of the coach and bus industry to signal support for the Ukrainian people with the launch of a fundraising exercise for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, to which it has contributed £300.

A donation page for the Chalkwell-initiated scheme has been established via JustGiving. The UK government has match funded up to £25m donated to the DEC Appeal.

Says Chalkwell Managing Director Roland Eglinton: “What is happening in Ukraine is heart-breaking. We wanted, as a company, to take steps in order to help.

“Our donation will go some of the way to providing food, water, shelter and medical supplies. The fundraising page we have set up is available now and each and every donation will help.”

Chalkwell is also participating in the provision of free bus and scheduled coach travel in England to refugees arriving from Ukraine, a scheme agreed between the industry and the Department for Transport on 18 March.
