Capulus is a specialist motor fleet underwriter operating in the transportation arena for six years writing over £200 million in premiums. We are supported by the long-term agreement of A+ rated capacity partners, Alwyn Insurance Company Limited, part of the Arch Capital Group.

Capulus started writing business in May 2018 focusing on hauliers, couriers, and self-drive hire operators. In January 2023, following the addition to the business of a team with decades of experience underwriting passenger transport in the fleet market, Capulus began writing coach, minibus, and bus policies.

Starting with seven people, the business now employs over forty staff between its underwriting and claims offices in South Wales and Essex and underwriters will be found in London every week meeting our clients and brokers. All underwriters are senior level and empowered to make decisions as required to ensure a swift response to brokers and customers, whether that be about a quote for new business, renewal of existing, or terms for any unique opportunity to the customer which may be outside the conditions of the policy.

In the early days of Capulus, claims were outsourced to a Third-Party Administrator but were brought ‘in house’ in 2021 to our own UK based office and handlers. The move proved to be positive for both the business and our clients alike as we can exercise direct control, aggressively mitigating the cost of third-party claims spend, whilst ensuring a speedy repair process for our customers vehicles, getting them back on the road as soon as possible.

Capulus remains an independent underwriter and is not tied by ownership or any other means to an insurance broker, allowing us trade with whoever we or the customer chooses. This independence provides a strong foundation to write business at the appropriate terms and ensure a result which means we are here for many years to come and provide stability for our customers.

The operational side of Capulus has been designed to ensure processes are simple and transparent to the customer. Whether that be accepting claims notifications by an online portal, telephone call, or email, to operating a pro-rata adjustment basis to make sure you only pay for the cover you need. Adjustments are charged based on the vehicles you or your insurance broker add to the Motor Insurance Database via our own portal, and the premium charge is calculated to the second!

The business has an excellent data warehouse and an enviable management information suite. We are keen to meet with our customers and their broker, both from the underwriting and claims side of the business, giving access to our data which often provides additional insight into the risk for the customer and helps identify areas which can be improved.

Our appetite to write business is strongest where operators are 5-50 vehicles being used for contract hire, private hire, and tour work. If you fit this profile, ask your insurance broker for a Capulus quotation ahead of your next renewal and see how our proposition compares!
