First Bus has marked the full electrification of its depot in York with the removal of the fuel tank.
The garage in James Street is now the first in Yorkshire to use only electric charging as fuel for its buses.
The operator has worked out of the site for more than 30 years and work began on the conversion to all-electric from diesel 12 months ago.
The tank weighed 10 tonnes and was refilled twice a week with up to 44,000 litres of fuel.
First York has a fleet of 86 zero-emission buses, saving nearly 5,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
Kayleigh Ingham, Commercial Director of First North and West Yorkshire, says: ““We’re making history with the removal of our diesel refuelling tank. This is now the first bus depot in Yorkshire to operate its fleet entirely using electric charging.
“We are leading a greener transport revolution in York and the wider region.
“This depot is at the forefront of First Bus’s strategy to have a zero-emission fleet nationally by 2035.
“EVs can attract more people to consider bus travel by realising the real impact this has in creating cleaner air and enjoying a much smoother, quieter ride.”
