Southern section of Cambridgeshire Busway reopens

The southern section of the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway has reopened after completion of work to increase safety.

One direction of the route between Cambridge Railway Station and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus had been closed since February 2022. That was to allow for a safety review after two pedestrians and a cyclists died on the mixed-use path alongside it between 2015 and 2022.

The reopening of the Busway section – complete with new safety fence – has cut journey times between the Campus and railway station to less than five minutes. The diversion had involved trips of more than 30 minutes at peak times.

The Busway is the longest of its type in the world. Stagecoach East, which operates the service alongside Whippet, last year introduced pioneering Intelligent Speed Assistance technology to automatically limit speeds of buses.

Darren Roe, Managing Director of Stagecoach East, says: “We are delighted for our customers that this important piece of our local transport network is now fully open again.

“Whether you are going to work or to the shops, for a night out at the theatre or to meet friends, getting the Busway is the easiest and best value way to get into Cambridge.

“The Busway is a key part of our wider network in Cambridge, where we pride ourselves on our value. A 28 Day MegaRider allows adults unlimited travel in the Town Zone for just £2.72, and the youth price is only £1.93. Likewise, a Large Group ticket allows 5 people unlimited travel for just £2.40 each.”
