A Stagecoach East driver has been recognised with an award for his potentially life-saving actions for a member of the public who was suffering from a suspected heart attack.
Paul McCarthy, a driver at the Peterborough depot, won the Mick Capper Award, which is open to the operator’s drivers, engineers, presentation team and support staff throughout the region.
A trainee at the time, Paul and his mentor, Scott Gibson, were met with a man knocking at the bus door complaining of heart pain and then collapsing.
Paul used his first-aid experience to apply CPR when the man stopped breathing. After the emergency services arrived and took over, he continued his shift as normal.
The award is named after a driver and colleague who passed away due to COVID.
