‘Industry’s wisdom enhanced by academics’

I was pleased to note Jim Hulme's personal tribute to Paul Fawcett.

Paul Fawcett’s practical academia helped to shape the industry

There is, however, a much wider sense in which Paul's influence on the transport industry should be remembered.

Generations of supervisors and aspiring managers benefited from having Paul as a tutor and mentor, over more than 25 years at several educational establishments in the North of England, and many of his colleagues and former students went on to work alongside him at the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and various advisory bodies.

It used to be the case that professional qualifications were an essential part of supervisory or management employment in the industry.

The influence of practical academics like Paul may not now be felt as it once was, but there is no doubt that it has helped to shape the wisdom and professionalism of the industry as we now know it.

Part of Paul's legacy should be that we don't lose sight of that.
